High FSH in Women and Men;
FSH hormone is a hormone secreted from the brain that stimulates the ovaries in women and the testicles in men. Thus, it both develops the reproductive cells, sperm and egg, and secretes the female and male hormones, estrogen and testosterone. FSH measurement is best done between the 2nd and 7th days of the healthy menstrual period. It is done between days.
The increase in the FSH hormone actually indicates that the ovaries in women and the testicles in men are not functioning adequately. In other words, FSH released from the brain increases and tries to compensate for the lack of production in the ovaries. In a normally functioning ovary, the FSH value is usually below 10 mIU/ml. Values between 10 and 15 indicate that reserves are decreasing and the chance of pregnancy is relatively weakened. We know from studies and experience that at values between 15 and 20, the situation is more serious and it becomes very difficult to achieve pregnancy. In general, in vitro fertilization treatments do not yield results at values above 25.
Values above 40 mIU/ml usually indicate menopause.
According to the results of the research, even if normal values are observed from time to time, FSH values showing signs of elevation indicate that the chance of pregnancy has decreased for that individual.
Decreased ovarian reserves can also be easily detected by ultrasound. As the number of small water sacs called antral follicles, which are 3-8 mm in size in the ovaries, decreases, FSH values will also increase.
High FSH is a condition generally associated with age for women. In other words, as age progresses, especially after the age of 35, an increase in the FSH hormone may be observed. However, sometimes a decrease in ovarian reserve and an increase in FSH can be observed in young women. The most common reason for this is thought to be genetic structure.
Approaches to Infertility Treatments at Older Ages:
If an older woman decides to become pregnant, the first thing to do is to conduct a preliminary investigation of medical problems that may occur when pregnancy occurs. Previously undetected conditions such as hypertension or diabetes may cause unwanted problems after pregnancy.
If a woman cannot become pregnant within 6 to 12 months, she should be evaluated by an experienced gynecologist. It takes 1 - 2 months to complete the necessary preliminary tests, and the appropriate treatment is determined and started immediately.
Along with the usual tests, FSH, LH and estradiol (E2) measurements taken during certain periods of menstruation provide important information about the condition of the ovaries. The results provide additional information about the woman's chances of success.
Women in the older age group should know that their chances of pregnancy with genetic problems are higher than younger women. When they become pregnant, it is possible to reveal this situation through interventions such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling during pregnancy.
While purchasing young women's eggs from some centers abroad is an alternative for elderly infertile women who cannot get results despite treatment, adoption may be considered since this practice is not legal in our country.
Pregnant women with advanced maternal age may also have to deal with many problems during pregnancy. More detailed information on this subject can be read on the pregnancy pages.
